Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is an HD NES Brawler

A friend of mine introduced me to the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels four or five years ago, way before anyone had ever really heard of them, and certainly before there was talk of a major motion picture adaptation. I mention this fact not for any sort of indier-than-thou street cred but rather to make it clear that when I read the first volume, I had no idea what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect a comic that didn’t just drop liberal, casual references to cult classic Nintendo 8-bit games but actually made them integral to its story. But there it was: A comic tale of love and relationships whose narrative owed as much to River City Ransom as to Marvel Romance.

Now that the comic is being made into a movie, it’s fitting and appropriate that the resulting videogame tie-in also draws obvious inspiration from River City Ransom as well. Honestly, anything else would have been missing the point. But this? This seems like an absolutely perfect way to bring the comic to life.

World of WarCrafts: Fan artists breathe creativity into their hobbies

World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music, fan fiction and more.

I’ve been reading an anthropological analysis of the World of Warcraft for an upcoming 15 Minutes of Fame that talks about the game as an “active aesthetic experience,” a collective expression in which the participation of all is key to the entire experience. One of the things I’m most looking forward to talking about with the author is the incredible creative energy that WoW breathes into so many talented artists, writers, crafters and musicians. From WoW-themed arts and crafts that tickle our fancies to re-imaginings of the very artistic underpinnings of the game soundtrack and art itself, the World of Warcraft has inspired so many people across the world.

While obviously we could invite you to scroll through our backlog of World of WarCrafts columns (and indeed, if you’re interested in any sort of creative effort, we think you should), we decided to make things simple. We’d like to invite you to our new resource guide, Arts and crafts in WoW. From how-to instructions for arts and crafts, to recipe “strats” bringing you the flavors of Azeroth, to soundtracks and artwork and fan fic and more, we’ve gathered the best of our galleries and in-depth features together in one place. We hope you find it as enjoyable and inspirational as we do … Welcome to the sights and sounds of the community of World of Warcraft!

Guest Post: Three fresh ideas for world PvP events

This article has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com.

Of all the PvP events I’ve participated in over the years, the battle for Halaa in Nagrand always sticks out in my mind as one of the best-executed examples of world PvP that the World of Warcraft has ever produced. The battle for Halaa brought together several areas of warfare in perfect harmony.

  • The element of surprise The battle for Halaa took place at any time. Whenever the opposite faction felt like taking control of the city, they could form a raid and start bombing. It left the controlling faction scrambling to assemble a defense when the words “Halaa is under attack!” popped up on their screens.
  • Aerial assault Players had to activate one of four wyvern stations and fly over the city of Halaa to drop bombs, causing massive amounts of damage. Until the defenses were weakened, players could not successfully enter the city.
  • Sabotage While enemy players were taking to the skies, one of the keys to success was to destroy the activated wyvern stations to prevent those enemy players from immediately taking off for another bombing run.
  • Siege warfare Once the city’s defenses were eliminated, the conquering force moved into the city center and held the city captive. Either the defending faction would break the siege and regain control of the city or it would be lost to the conquering heroes.
  • Spoils of war Defeating your enemy within the boundaries of Halaa yielded you a Halaa Battle Token. Once you controlled Halaa, those tokens could be spent on various rewards, including the coveted Dark War Talbuk.

With new expansions come new territories to explore and conquer. Sadly, Nagrand and the war-torn city of Halaa fell to the wayside in favor of Wintergrasp once Wrath of the Lich King was released. So what does a player who is hungry for world PvP do now? If you have some friends and are will to do a little organizing and promoting, here are three new ideas to spring on your server.
