Located a short ways away from central Tokyo in Kamakura, the Capcom Seaside Cafe and its counterpart, the Monster Hunter Kitchen, sit about a hundred feet away from the ocean on Enoshima Beach. We stopped by the cafe while in the area this weekend, and though it wasn’t anywhere close to the biggest draw in the area, the cafe-kitchen was a cool place to grab a snack and a cold one during a hot day.
The cafe serves tea and coffee and is packed with eighty different kinds of merchandise related to all of Capcom’s current and upcoming games. The shelves are lined with Monster Hunter, Ghost Trick, Last Ranker, Okami, and Monster Hunter shirts, towels, and keychains. A large television runs trailers for said games on a loop. Cafe customers have the chance to spin a Wheel of Fortune-like board in the back. The wheel is divided into sections, each representing a Capcom title. If the spin lands on the “game of the day,” the lucky guest gets a free drink.

Nintendo has to be happy with topping the console sales charts over in Japan for the first half of 2010…even if they did so with a game they actually released last year. In fact, if you’re worried that the Japan game marketplace is stagnant and littered with sequels and casual titles, these latest figures — announced in the new issue of Famitsu magazine — won’t make you feel any less uneasy.
According to Famitsu’s stats, the top selling game of 2010 so far is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, with 1,401,895 copies — yes, in 2010 alone. The platformer, originally released December 3, 2009 in Japan, has continually been the top sales leader for the Wii ever since, breaking three million in sales after only seven weeks on the market. It’s also been a huge asset to hardware sales over there, with over 700,000 Wiis sold in Japan in the month of December.
Otherwise, the sales charts offered few surprises to those familiar with the Japan game business. Dragon Quest games took the second and third sports on the list, and the head-scratchingly popular Tomodachi Collection placed fourth — again, despite coming out over a year ago. Even Mario Kart DS, which has now been available for over four and a half years, took #67 on the charts with 72,774 copies sold so far in 2010. Eesh. (The best selling non-sequel title that actually came out this year: Namco Bandai’s God Eater, at 605,000 copies.)

A bit of a slow week for new releases in Japan coming up — gamers over there are still mostly excited about Monster Hunter Frontier Online on the Xbox 360, which has been out for a bit but finally got reviewed in Famitsu this week, earning 36 out of 40 points.
The remaining highlights:
- Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo (9/8/9/8, 34 points): The DS Fire Emblem remake, which inserts your own character into the story of Marth’s campaign across the land, seems to be a big success. “It’s a remake at the core, but the way your player-character intertwines with the story makes things interesting even for past players,” said one reviewer. “The interstitial conversations are also nice, and the controls are as solid as always.”

It isn’t quite out in the US yet (that won’t be for another couple of months or so), but the Japanese edition of PSP monster-hunt-’em-up God Eater is about to get a major upgrade — large enough that they’re releasing it as a whole new retail package instead of a downloadable update.
The so-called God Eater Burst will feature a variety of tweaks to the visuals, player animations, and game balance, all in an effort to make the learning curve a little less steep for beginners. The weapon and player costume counts have both been doubled, and NBGI is working on a variety of gameplay upgrades, from Phantasy Star Online-style tradable player profile cards to a brand-new story chapter.
“Since the release of the first God Eater, we’ve received a tremendous amount of feedback from gamers,” producer Yusuke Tomizawa told Famitsu magazine this week. “It’s been very valuable for us to listen to their voices, and naturally there are things that we ourselves wanted to improve on with the game as well. That’s where the Burst project began — we wanted to create a more perfect God Eater, something gamers could enjoy all over again.”
