GameStop Purchases Flash Game Site Kongregate

Kongregate logoGameStop may make a majority of their profits through used game sales, but further evidence that they continue to look toward the future of digital releases came today as the publisher announced it has purchased the hugely popular Flash games site Kongregate.

The details of the deal were not disclosed, other than that GameStop purchased the site in full and Kongregate is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of the infamous games retail giant (via GamesIndustry.biz). Also unclear are exactly what plans GameStop eventually has in store for Kongregate, although a statement released by the company reads that “acquiring Kongregate strengthens GameStop’s digital platform and its commitment to become the gaming aggregator of choice.”

Tellingly, GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines also recently expressed his desire to evolve the GameStop website “from a purely e-commerce site to a gaming platform that users can visit to play, learn, and purchase games.” Purchasing Kongregate certainly seems like a first step in that endeavor, and in a statement Raines said it “advances GameStop’s digital strategy by providing a gaming platform for casual, mobile, and browser games that can be promoted and played by our existing gamers.”

Deadliest Warrior: The Game Review

Strip the internet of all the pornography, box cat videos, and idiotic Facebook status updates and you’re pretty much left with one thing: lots and lots of “Who would win” forum threads. From what I can tell, the only thing more universally appealing than conflict is conflict that’s extremely unlikely or altogether impossible — like we’re hard-wired to argue about whether a bear could take a shark or something. Even the most recent Fight Night sported an imaginary bout between Muhammed Ali and Mike Tyson on its cover.

Someone at Spike TV clearly understands mankind’s need for far-fetched bloodsport, because Deadliest Warrior: The Game (and the television show that inspired it) taps right into the spirit of “this vs. that” internet discussions. Ever wonder what would happen if a Spartan hoplite went toe-to-toe with a ninja? What about an Apache warrior against a medieval knight? Deadliest Warrior takes those questions and answers them with a fighting game that’s one part Soul Calibur, one part Bushido Blade, and almost entirely too generic for its own good.

Good Game: Limbo. Series 6, Ep 24

Limbo is the first game from Danish indie-developer 'Playdead'. This is an unbroken, 2D side-scrolling platformer, and quite literally the first thing you'll do in this game is… step off a cliff and die. It teaches you very quickly to be careful. Not only that, but it is heart-breakingly brutal. Check out Good Game on ABC2, Mondays 8.30pm. www.abc.net.au

Irrational Games Holding Event in August, New Game Reveal Likely

Irrational Games Save the Date

It’s been almost three years since the first BioShock was released, and we still don’t have any idea of what Ken Levine’s next project will be. That’ll likely change next month, though, as Irrational Games has sent out a “save the date” to announce an event planned for August 11 in New York City, where Levine’s new game will likely finally be revealed.

As you can see in the image above (via Joystiq), there’s barely any info provided here, other than the date, city, and a promise that “details and formal email invitations” will be sent out soon. Still, while it doesn’t mention anything about a game announcement, it’s hard to imagine what else this event could possibly be for other than to reveal “Project Icarus,” the codename for BioShock creator Ken Levine’s new game that’s been in development for about three years now.

So far, all we know is that this new project will be a new IP, so don’t expect a sequel to any of Irrational’s earlier franchises (BioShock, System Shock, Freedom Force, etc.). Other than that, your guess is as good as ours. Literally, in fact — Irrational Games recently put out a request for fans to call in to their voicemail and leave their best guesses about what this new game will be.
