Democrats took on a pair of Republican senators Friday, signing on to an amendment that would make lawmakers join the public option.
On Thursday, thinking Democratic senators would balk at the idea, Sens. David Vitter (R-La.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) introduced the gimmick health-care amendment.
“The idea, broad-brush, is that whatever government option is in the bill, every senator and every representative should be enrolled in it,” Vitter told The Hill. “No other possibilities, no other choices.”
“It’s called leadership,” Coburn said. “If it’s good enough for everybody else, we ought to b

By midday yesterday it looked like we might be in for a big Cyber Monday, and today, final stats show that it was definitely a strong showing for online retailers.
According to numbers provided by Coremetrics, sales for this year’s Cyber Monday beat last year by 13.7 percent. Moreover, it appears that Black Friday deals moving online hasn’t taken much thunder away from the year’s busiest online shopping day –- sales yesterday topped this year’s Black Friday by 24.1 percent.
Some other numbers directly from the report [PDF link]:
The average dollar amount consumers spent per online order rose 38.2 percent from Cyber Monday 2008 ($180.03 versus $130.24), led by apparel retailers.
Consumers bought nearly 10 percent more items per order on Cyber Monday 2009 compared to Black Friday 2009 and nearly 30 percent more compared to Cyber Monday 2008.
Consumer shopping hit its peak from 9-10 a.m. PST, but maintained stronger momentum throughout the day than on Cyber Monday 2008.
The big Cyber Monday numbers follow strong results from Black Friday. Does that point to good economic news ahead? Perhaps, though Coremetrics is quick to point out that the stats are being driven at least in part by more consumers turning to the Web to find the best prices on items.

Black Friday tends to bring out the animalistic side of shoppers looking for great bargains. Smart retailers are hip to the craze, which has been somewhat of an internet meme ever since October, and they’re using the web and social media as platforms to generate even more interest.
Toys”R”Us appears to have found the magic formula for not only building buzz but gaining thousands of Facebook fans by the day. The toy retailer has wisely decided to give their Facebook fans, and Facebook fans only, a full preview of Black Friday discounts, as well as exclusive access to “Mystery Deals.”
Their calculating Facebook maneuver is helping them net hundreds of thousands fans. As they close in on 400,000 fans total, All Facebook is reporting that Toys”R”Us is currently the fastest growing brand on the social network.

Interesting enough, Toys”R”Us is using Scribd to display its 35 page, 120 plus product, Black Friday extravaganza within their Facebook Page. Fans can sift through the discounts, unearth the mystery deals, and of course share their enthusiasm with their Facebook friends.
Toys”R”Us isn’t just relying on Black Friday to encourage community participation and engagement on Facebook though, as they’ve also embedded their entire 80 page Big Book toy catalog as a part of their Page, and are posting in-store redeemable coupons.
This holiday season, social media may hold the key to helping retailers become profitable for the year, and by all indications, Toys”R”Us is doing everything right.
