I wasn't going to record any more until we finished making the game, but here's some new parts just for you patient people. There's not much for now though, just enough to show you we're still working on it on-and-off. Virus Bloke 2 (c) Piece of Pie Software Made By: Amerialla (twistykittycat), and Paul Smart (me)

The Mog Log: Hours of entertainment from just one boss

Every so often, column topics fall into my lap. Like when someone mentioned in the comments the other day that they were dreading the 18-hour boss fight from Final Fantasy XI would return in Final Fantasy XIV. For those of you who don’t know what in the world that was referencing… well, it’s time to take a look back at Pandemonium Warden, and the now legendary story of what it took for one linkshell to bring him down. Although by “bring him down,” we really mean “fight him for nearly a full day and finally give up.

That’s the image that Final Fantasy XI’s boss fights have in a lot of people’s heads. It’s a great and evocative image, and it’s also riddled with inaccuracies. That having been said, the nigh-on insanity of some boss fights in the game merits discussion as we get closer and closer to Final Fantasy XIV’s release. Whether you’re wondering about the warden’s odds of return or just still believe that the boss fight properly went on for nearly a day, jump on past the break. There’s a lot to go over.

Sony Studio Boss Upset by Insomniac Going Multi-Platform

Insomniac EA

Sony has known about Insomniac Games’ wishes to strike out on their own since 2008, but that didn’t make the transition any easier for Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida. Develop reports that he was saddened by the decision, though he understood the developer’s desires to stretch out on their own.

“We grew up together,” he said. “Insomniac’s first tile [sic] was on our first platform. We had a long lasting partnership with the studio’s management team, and I personally was the producer in Japan for Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank.” He says the developer was “very open about their need to grow and their intention.”

“They want to reach the people they haven’t been able to,” Yoshida said, “so it was sad to hear a couple of years ago what their intent was, but as we are growing, Insomniac is growing too. And the studio has its own ambition, so I totally understand, and I am very happy how they approached they announcement. They made sure that people know they are still working with us.”

Activision Boss Wants Consoles to Be Replaced by PCs

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has spoken out against dedicated videogame consoles, claiming that his company could be making significantly more money on more open platforms like the PC.

Speaking to the Financial Times (registration required), Kotick claims that 60 percent of Xbox Live users are there “principally because of Call of Duty,” and that Activision doesn’t see a fair share of the money from it.

First Look: NBA Jam Wii’s Boss Battles and Remix Mode

Last week, I wrote a feature going behind the scenes of the new NBA Jam and looking back at its history, and one of the big themes that kept popping up was how the team at EA is trying to be extremely faithful to the 1993 original. I know it sounds like marketing speak when I write it out of context like that, but I’ll back their comments: I’ve played a few hours of the new game, and the nuances — in everything from the animation to the controls to the design — go a long way to making it feel a lot like a modern version of the classic.

But with a remake like this, there’s always a fine line between being too faithful (and getting tagged as an expensive prettier version of the old game), and straying too far from the source material. So now that we’re getting closer to the game’s release, EA’s ready to start talking about what makes the new NBA Jam different.

And the answer — at least based on what they’re talking about so far — comes in two forms: a Remix mode, where players will find challenges with unique parameters, and Boss Battles, where players will take on NBA legends in custom 1-on-1 games.

ESA Boss Calls for Billboard-Style Charts for Games

Billboard

Most forms of media have their own top sales charts, and ESA boss Michael Gallagher believes the games are overdue for a similar treatment. Kotaku reports that Gallagher is seeking a more regular set of charts to explain video game sales, aside from the monthly NPD data.

“I do think that the movie industry has a significant advantage over other forms of media,” Gallagher said, “because on Monday morning… whether you are driving, or looking at the newspaper, what’s there: the top ten movies. What’s next to that? Numbers. I don’t know if they are completely accurate, but we’re trained to believe they are. And that helps the movie industry.” He says games are “still seeking our center of gravity.”

He goes on to suggest that the growing industry hasn’t had its sales tracking grow with it. “I think there is thought, because you now have significant revenue, and growth and investment and where that flows you tend to get better information,” he said. “Reporters ask for it, investors certainly do and then there are consumers. There is an advantage to the companies to figure out a way to report that.”

THQ Boss Questions Value of Television Advertising

The head of core games at THQ, Danny Bilson, wonders if television advertising is the best way to reach gamers. In an interview with Alistdaily, Bilson commented on how he can get more mileage of his marketing budget out of other forms of advertising. He used the marketing plan for the upcoming game Homefront as an example.

“One of the bigger questions we have to ask ourselves is, how important is television?” he said. “I question it severely. It’s incredibly expensive, and what I can do with two million dollars, which will buy a few TV spots on a big sporting event, what I can do outdoor, or on the web, or direct-to-consumer is way more exciting.”
