Betawatch: August 20 – 27, 2010

Welcome to Betawatch, Massively’s weekly report on the state of MMO betas. In each installment, we’ll report everything from the latest open betas, closed betas and even alphas in one convenient place. Plus, we’ll make sure to include as much info on each game’s current status, including projected release dates (if known) and links to the sign-up forms to get yourself into that beta you’ve been seeking.

This has been a relatively quiet week on Betawatch, since most developers are a bit busy with other things right now, but it’s a sort of calm before the storm — expect quite a few changes in September! We do have a few exciting pieces of news for this week.

Final Fantasy XIV’s closed beta has ended, and open beta is set for August 31st. The current round of closed beta testing ended for Vindictus earlier this week as well, and Earth Eternal’s uncertain fate got a little less dire.

Follow along after the jump for the latest Betawatch list.

Betawatch: August 13 – 20, 2010

Welcome to Betawatch, Massively’s weekly report on the state of MMO betas. In each installment, we’ll report everything from the latest open betas, closed betas and even alphas in one convenient place. Plus, we’ll make sure to include as much info on each game’s current status, including projected release dates (if known) and links to the sign-up forms to get yourself into that beta you’ve been seeking.

Uncharted Waters Online began an extremely generous closed beta this week — it’s a closed beta that allows everyone in, no keys needed, so check it out. Clone Wars Adventures got all sneaky on us, moving to open beta on the 18th with absolutely zero fanfare. That’s not the only game moving to the OB list, either — Zentia went to open beta as well, much to the delight of several Massively staffers.

Follow along after the jump for all the current Betawatch goodness.

Worms Reloaded Launching August 26

With the beta testing phase having ended, Worms Reloaded now has a release date. The newest game in the franchise will be launching in August on the PC and Mac.

Worms Reloaded marks the franchise’s first 2D appearance on the PC since 2001, when Worms World Party was released. More recent Worms games have been developed for consoles and downloadable services like Xbox Live Arcade.

Worms Reloaded is based on Worms 2 Armageddon, which was originally released for the Xbox 360, but is being billed as an “extended edition.” It’s currently available for pre-order on Steam.

Irrational Games Holding Event in August, New Game Reveal Likely

Irrational Games Save the Date

It’s been almost three years since the first BioShock was released, and we still don’t have any idea of what Ken Levine’s next project will be. That’ll likely change next month, though, as Irrational Games has sent out a “save the date” to announce an event planned for August 11 in New York City, where Levine’s new game will likely finally be revealed.

As you can see in the image above (via Joystiq), there’s barely any info provided here, other than the date, city, and a promise that “details and formal email invitations” will be sent out soon. Still, while it doesn’t mention anything about a game announcement, it’s hard to imagine what else this event could possibly be for other than to reveal “Project Icarus,” the codename for BioShock creator Ken Levine’s new game that’s been in development for about three years now.

So far, all we know is that this new project will be a new IP, so don’t expect a sequel to any of Irrational’s earlier franchises (BioShock, System Shock, Freedom Force, etc.). Other than that, your guess is as good as ours. Literally, in fact — Irrational Games recently put out a request for fans to call in to their voicemail and leave their best guesses about what this new game will be.
